How to Identify the Right Ignition Coils for Your GM Truck or SUV
Ordering the wrong ignition coils for your GM truck or SUV (Silverado, Suburban, Sierra, Express Van, and more) is a common mistake. These vehicles come with two different ignition coil styles—round and square—and the best way to determine which type you have is by visually inspecting them under the hood.
To make things easier, we created a video explaining the differences in detail, so you can confidently choose the correct ignition coils for your GM vehicle. Below, we've also listed the original stamped part numbers to help with identification.
Round vs. Square Ignition Coils: What’s the Difference?
- Round coils have a cylindrical body (not perfectly round, but clearly not boxy).
- Square coils have a rectangular, boxy shape, making them easy to distinguish from round coils.
- 2007 models can be especially confusing, as Classic and Regular versions may use different coils.
While it's possible to identify ignition coils by VIN number, we’ve found this method unreliable. Many of these GM trucks and SUVs have had engine replacements over the years, making visual inspection the best approach.
