Setting ignition Timing a Honda or Acura (cars with a distributor)

Setting the Timing on a Honda/Acura

When setting the timing on a Honda or Acura, you will need a timing light, and a Honda SST (to jumper the wire under the passenger's foot panel). A paper clip will also do the same job.

Step 1: Turn the ignition to the "ON" position without starting the car. At this point the lights on the dashboard should all be on.

Step 2: Remove the passenger side foot panel where the main computer is located. Near the main computer, you will see a wire with a connector that isn't plugged into anything. Bend the paper clip so you are able to insert it in both ends of the connector. At this point, the check engine light should turn on. This is normal.

Step 3: Connect the timing light to the battery, and the magnetic pick up to the #1 spark plug wire.

Step 4: Point the timing light towards the crankshaft pulley. You will see one mark that is separate from three marks. The single mark is 0 BTDC. The three marks are 2 degrees apart from each other. Usually 10, 12, and 14 degrees BTDC, but make sure to check your manual as different Honda/Acura models may differ slightly.

Step 5: Loosen the distributor bolts enough to allow you to adjust the distributor.

Step 6: Set the timing per the manufacturer's recommendation, tighten the distributor bolts, remove the paper clip, and you are finished!
